About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a discussion between Justine and her doctor, Gungen. Justine tells Gungen that she thinks she's pregnant and asks him to confirm it with her. Gungen tells her that many women in the upper class act like they're pregnant when they realize that they are pregnant, which is understandable. Justine says that she doesn't want to tell Gungen what she thinks, but she does want Gungen to confirm that she is pregnant. She asks Gungen if she has met a woman named jasmine, and Gungen says that he's met her a number of times, but that she isn't "really a mean person" and that she treats Justine and Jarndyce well. Justine wonders if people like her are like this because she is so "rational" and "professional" . She says that her brother, Aaron, is taking care of everything, and that it's still a dream for her to marry him. Justine wants to know what she can do to help her brother-in-law and his family. She wants to be friends or even sisters with them, but says that Justine is the only member of her family who is afraid to share and understand others. Her parents gave her all the love she could, but Justine is afraid of not doing enough for others, so she makes her family livelier. Justine asks what she'll do now that her tummy is getting bigger, but Gungen responds that he believes that she will get better, too. He also tells Justine that he has been in love for a long while, but only with a dead woman in his heart. After she died, no one would enter his heart, and no one else would look in his eye.
