In this chapter, we learn that Roxane's father has died, and that her mother has been acting strangely ever since. When Roxane asks what her father's plans are for her son, she learns that he has been sent away to live with another family. Roxane also learns that her father has not spoken to her for a long time, and she is sorry that she will not be able to attend her daughter's wedding. She tells Roxane that her son is doing much better, and Roxane thanks him for all he has done for her. He tells her that he used to be ashamed of his own weakness, but that now he has someone to hold his hand.
