The doll's brother, Hiroyuki, explains that the ship was once owned by his family, but that the previous owner tricked the headmaster into giving away the ship to another family. The new owner promised to take the children off to work, but the headmaster refused to let the children go. The doll, however, belongs to her brother, and she begs Hiroyuki to let her come with her.
