About This Chapter
The narrator is overcome with emotion as he realizes that his life is coming to an end. He wants to meet his father one last time before he dies. He asks his father's name, and the man answers that he is a "lunatic" . He tells the narrator that a member of his national shooting team, Kwak Taebum, has been involved in a car crash. Kwak is in a stable condition, but it is unclear whether he will be allowed to participate in the upcoming Olympic Games or not. The narrator tells the man that he heard that Kwak was training today, and that his career as a competitor could be over if he does not return to the gym. The man is shocked, but the narrator tells him that even if Kwak completes his rehabilitation, he will not be able to continue as an athlete because he is "trying to act tough." The man replies that the man is jealous that he has good parents and that he came to America because of his parents. He says that if the man had tried to stop Kwak, he would have been hurt, and he will kill the man if he tries to stop him. The old man says that the blood sent to Kwak's lord must be "clean," and the narrator points out that this is not the case with Kwak.
