This chapter opens with a description of a dog named Denice, who is a member of the First Platoon. Denice's nose is red, and he is wearing a mask to hide his nose from the smell of the patients. He tells Denice that his mission is to protect the patients who are suffering from a gunshot wound. When he sees that one patient has a fracture on her face, he decides to watch over her. He asks Denice if he can "animalize" while he is washing his clothes, and Denice tells him that he can't because animals are "all arrogant" and that he should hurry up to help the other soldiers. When Denice realizes that he has no time to observe the patient, he tells her to stop bothering him, and asks her to go back to her friends.
