About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Captain Hawdon in which he tells the reader that Hawdon will be put in a firing squad and the officer will kill him for not keeping an eye on him. Hawdon says that he'd rather be killed in battle than be caught having sex with a prostitute. He tells Hawdon that he doesn't care what the officers think of him because he's going to wash himself and go to sleep. He's not worried about the officers finding out that he had sex with the prostitute, he'll be found guilty of an offense and sentenced to court martial. But Hawdon is worried about what the other officers think. He wonders if Hawdon would turn on him now, would she? The showers survived the bomb, he says, and he wonders if she would turn him on now if she had some scars on her back. He says that if she does, he has to take responsibility for it. He asks Hawdon to stop touching him without clothes on, but Hawdon insists that they have to stop having sex. He scolds Hawdon for trying to help him, and says that they shouldn't be getting too shy with each other naked. He accuses Hawdon of being the one who rejected him right away, and asks if he said anything to hurt his feelings. He points out that if he hates it so much, why does he try so hard? Hawdon admits that he does, but says that it's always for him. He goes on to say that he went to check on Hawdon just in case he was in trouble, but he was okay, and Hawdon smells too bad.
